No More “No Mow May”

Did you know? It is no longer advised to participate in No Mow May. It promotes non-native dandelions and invasive weeds to go to seed and spread. Instead, consider Mow Less Summer!

You can mow in May, but only once or twice. Throughout the spring and summer, try to stick with mowing every 2 to 3 weeks all season. When it gets hot and dry in August, you might be able to skip the mow all together if nothing is growing. Shoot for mowing 6-8 times all spring and summer. The key is to let the “lawn” grow taller, which shades the ground and prevents evaporation and therefore retains water.

When it is time to mow, make sure to do a check for amphibians first! A great task for the kiddos. If you own a conventional lawn mower, it ends up saving gas and therefore pollutes the air less. Even better, consider switching to an electric mower! The Rowley Municipal Lighting Plant even offers a rebate for the purchase of electric lawn equipment. Check it out!
