SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY
Our community in the Town of Rowley is already doing so many great things to move towards a greener community.
In 2023, Pine Grove School students began composting their lunch scraps with Black Earth, thanks to funding support from the Triton Education Fund. The efforts, monitored by two volunteer parents, reduce the amount of cafeteria waste by half on the days the program is run.
In 2022, a resident worked to place a textile donation bin at Town Hall Annex for clothing, linen, and other textiles that can no longer be worn or used for other purposes. The donation bin has been so successful that a second bin was placed in 2024!
That same year, the Rowley Municipal Lighting Plant completed the installation of the town’s first Public Level 2 EV Charging Station located at the Rowley Public Library, funded by a Massachusetts Electric Vehicle Incentive Program (MassEVIP) Public Access Charging (PAC) grant through the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
Since 2021, a group of residents have organized the annual town-wide Rowley Roadside Clean Up event to remove litter along our streets. The event has grown bigger each year, with 2023 resulting in volunteer trash removal on over 16 miles of town streets!
In 2020, the Town of Rowley was designated as a Green Community by committing to reduce municipal energy consumption by 20 percent over five years. The commitment was alongside 12 other Merrimack Valley communities and 280 state-wide. Rowley received over $136,000 to replace lights with LED bulbs and invest in renewable thermal technologies such as air source heat pumps. Where will we go from here?
